Why PPI Matters for Your Shopify Print Products

Most photo upload apps only check file size. Here's why pixels-per-inch validation is the difference between happy customers and wasted inventory.

If you sell personalised print products on Shopify — photo mugs, canvas prints, phone cases, or anything else — you've almost certainly dealt with this: a customer uploads a photo that looks fine on screen but prints terribly.

The reason? PPI (pixels per inch), and it's the most overlooked metric in the Shopify photo upload space.

What is PPI and why does it matter?

PPI measures how many pixels fit into one inch of printed output. A photo might be 3000x2000 pixels, which sounds like a lot. But if you're printing it on a 20x13 inch canvas, that's only 150 PPI — far below the 300 PPI standard for quality prints.

Most upload apps (and even most image editors) don't connect the dots between:

  • The customer's photo resolution
  • Your specific product dimensions
  • The PPI required for quality output

They just check if the file is "big enough" in megapixels. That's not good enough for professional print products.

The real-world cost of ignoring PPI

When a customer's photo doesn't meet your PPI requirements, one of two things happens:

  1. You print it anyway — and the customer sees a blurry, pixelated product. They request a refund, leave a bad review, and never come back.
  2. You catch it after checkout — and you have to email the customer, explain the problem, wait for a new photo, and delay fulfillment.

Both scenarios cost you time, money, and reputation. The fix is simple: validate PPI before checkout.

How Uploads A-Plenty handles PPI

When you create an item in Uploads A-Plenty, you specify:

  • Physical dimensions (e.g., 102mm x 152mm for a 4x6 print)
  • Required PPI (e.g., 300 for standard, 600 for high-quality)

When a customer uploads a photo, the crop tool calculates the effective PPI based on the crop region and your dimensions. The customer sees a clear indicator:

  • Green — photo exceeds your PPI requirement
  • Yellow — photo is marginal (within 80-100% of target)
  • Red — photo will print poorly at this size

This happens in real-time, before checkout. The customer can zoom out, try a different photo, or acknowledge the quality warning — but they're never surprised by the result.

Setting the right PPI for your products

Here are our recommendations:

| Product Type | Recommended PPI | |-------------|----------------| | Standard photo prints | 300 | | Canvas / wall art | 150-300 | | Phone cases | 300-600 | | Mugs / drinkware | 300 | | Fabric / clothing | 150-300 | | Large format (posters) | 150 | | Premium / fine art | 600+ |

The key insight: PPI requirements depend on viewing distance. A poster viewed from 3 feet away needs far less PPI than a phone case viewed from 6 inches. Set your requirements based on how your product will actually be used.

The bottom line

If you're selling print products on Shopify without PPI validation, you're leaving quality to chance. Uploads A-Plenty is the only Shopify upload app that validates resolution against your actual print dimensions and PPI requirements — not just raw megapixels.

Your customers get better products. You get fewer returns. Everyone wins.
